2025 Toyota 4Runner

A brown 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is shown from the front.

Since 1984, Toyota has been putting serious work and effort into maintaining a foothold in the midsize SUV off-road segment with the 4Runner. The off-road theme has seen some massive changes over the years with each successive generation, and the latest sixth generation has gone underway with the release of the brand new 2025 Toyota 4Runner. The new model year for the new generation is a complete overhaul of many features and utilities. This includes a completely new powertrain line-up and a refreshed trim offering that expands the 4Runner’s capabilities even further beyond what it was able to do in previous generations.

The midsize 4Runner continues to seat five people across two rows, but there is an optional third-row seating configuration so that you can seat up to seven people. The exterior design has undergone a major revision with its body-on-frame chassis to look more rugged and utilitarian. The powertrain has been swapped from the outgoing 4.0-liter V6 to the all new 2.4-liter i-Force with hybrid capabilities, and you now have new trims and tech features that add a lot of value to the 2025 4Runner. This includes an all-new infotainment stack and an upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 3 system.

The trim-line now includes the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and the all new Trailhunter. The Trailhunter in particular has been designed with off-road enthusiasts squarely in mind, particularly those who want a very rugged and capable SUV that can overland for days without getting stranded, making it a highly competitive alternative to other off-road segment SUVs such as the Ford Bronco or Jeep Wrangler. This gives the 2025 4Runner a lot of versatility and utility as both a midsize daily driver and a very tough and muscular off-road SUV.

Engine Options

Built on the TNGA-F platform that shares with the all new Tacoma, the 4Runner is designed to be functional, utilitarian, and dependable, all without sacrificing its practicality for the average driver. There are two different configurations of Toyota’s all new patented i-Force powertrain available for the 2025 4Runner, in either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The base powertrain for the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and the Limited is the 2.4-liter i-Force turbocharged inline 4-cylinder, which makes 278 hp at 317 lb-ft of torque.

There is also the hybrid 2.4-liter i-Force Max turbocharged 4-cylinder, which is available on the TRD Off-Road and Limited and comes standard on the TRD Pro, Platinum, and Trailhunter. The i-Force Max gives you additional performance gains with the 4Runner, with up to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, helped by a 1.87 kWh NiMH battery pack. This makes the 2025 model year the most powerful 4Runner yet. Both the i-Force and i-Force Max are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Performance Enhancements

The 4Runner is also available in two different four-wheel drive configurations, with part-time four-wheel drive and full-time four-wheel drive available for those who need a high-end off-road SUV. It also comes with an automatic limited-slip rear differential for locking in that rear axle to obtain additional traction control. You even have a two-speed transfer case with high and low range, so you have stability and responsive performance for daily driving and low-end torque output for crawling and trail runs.

What’s more, you can control how the torque is distributed through the 4Runner’s drivetrain thanks to the Multi-Terrain Select drive mode system. This gives you adjustable ways to configure how the vehicle handles using the dial, which includes Mud, Dirt, and Sand. To buffer the off-road features is the Crawl Control function, which you can use as a low-speed cruise control for one-pedal driving. Further complimenting all of these features is Downhill Assist Control, which helps with traction control when heading downhill both on the road and off the road.

Capabilities

Increased Towing Power

The all new upgrade in performance and design of the Toyota 4Runner has enabled it to achieve some impressive feats with its capabilities. This includes an upgraded tow rating over the outgoing model year thanks to the i-Force powertrain. With that upgrade, the 4Runner is now able to achieve a max tow rating of 6,000 lbs. This gives you more towing capacity with the 4Runner than ever before, in addition to all new performance gains for the new model year and new generation midsize SUV.

A Sharp Design That’s Easy to Load Up

The 4Runner also features a lot of rugged capabilities and utility as well, packed into a very modern design. This includes an all new front fascia that features a very bold looking grille design and a very brawny front bumper. The fenders around the wheels are also much more pronounced with harder lines that accentuate the wide stance of the vehicle. You also have roof rails on every trim but the Trailhunter, which comes with its own ARB roof rack. The return of the rear power window is standard across the trim line, and a rear power liftgate for easy access into the rear cargo hold is also available.

Impressive Off-Road Prowess

When it comes to maneuvering off-road, the Trailhunter elevates the 4Runner’s offerings thanks to its highly durable design, featuring bash plates to protect the undercarriage, rock rails to protect the side body, an external side intake, and an overland rig fitted straight to the model right off the factory floor. The Trailhunter also comes standard with Old Man Emu 2.5-inch forged shocks with remote damping reservoirs, and it comes with 33-inch Toyo Open Country All-Terrain Tires that wrap up 18-inch bronze finished wheels. The Trailhunter also has a 2400W AC inverter for powering the cabin and cargo area, as well as rigid LED fog lamps. The other trims are also quite capable as well, with the TRD Pro coming equipped with OME-tuned shocks and 33-inch all-terrain Toyo tires, so you have different grades of off-roading capabilities depending on the trim that best suits you.

Convenience

The performance and capabilities of the 2025 4Runner are complemented with the interior convenience features thanks to a focus on ride stability and comfort. You have two row seating for up to five people, and optional third-row seating for up to seven people. The interior has a very utilitarian layout, foregoing fancy curves and roundabouts for harder lines and a more straightforward focus on what the 4Runner has to offer inside of its cabin. This includes power front seats, with available heated second row seats in the luxury-oriented Platinum trim. The Platinum also adds automatic rain sensing wipers and a digital heads-up display for the driver.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The tech flourishes throughout the 4Runner cabin thanks to a 7-inch digital driver display on the base 4Runner trims and a 12.3-inch digital driver display on the higher grades. Plus, you also have an 8-inch touchscreen on the base trims and a 14-inch HD touchscreen display available for the higher grades. Smartphone connectivity also comes standard on the SUV with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, as well as available Qi wireless charging for your smart devices. There is also the inclusion of USB-A and USB-C charging ports for your electronic devices as well.

Plus, you have 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity for those who need to stay connected while on the go. Every trim comes standard with push-button start and remote accessibility via the Remote Connect functionality. Other neat features include the rearview mirror with flip-switch functionality for an HD camera view. Another neat feature is the removable JBL Bluetooth wireless speaker, which you can take with you outside of the vehicle for mobile sound access, but otherwise works seamlessly with the available 14-speaker surround sound JBL system when it’s plugged into the front dashboard of the vehicle.

Safety

The 2025 4Runner features the standard inclusion of the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 across the trim line, which features a Pre-Collision Alert with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Plus, you have Road Sign Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, and Proactive Driving Assist that help to keep the vehicle stable and on the road based on recognizing driver mobility patterns. The available Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert also help with rounding out the safety features alongside Hill Start Assist, giving you a fully-featured and highly functional safety suite for on and off-the-road travels.
